The rape

The water kissed her skin
In through the sweet muslin
Wet in the violent monsoon..
Lucy, Alas! She died too soon!
......................
Strolling through the woods nearby
was she, a bird so free.
Divine she looked, but caught the eyes
of a few men, in number- three.
..........
The hungry wolves, they pounced on her
Grounded....lying down on her
They had her tied, they had her bared.
She screamed aloud; only if the woods had cared!
..
Beauty lay - captured, contained.
Beauty lay, wriggling in pain.
Beauty is too good a boon;
Beauty, is too bad a bane.
..
Haunted by the approaching night,
abandoned by the melody of rain,
consumed by the reach of appetite,
eclipsed was she, by the Satan's men.
..
They tasted her, a quivering mass of flesh
set on fire by the restless tongues
Lucy and her meek revolts.
Lucy and her exhausted lungs.
..
They incised her arms, they robbed her chest,
plundered her, feeding on her thighs.
Cunning giggles on their lips did rest,
resonating with her deafening sighs.
..
One of 'em, he revealed himself (as the others followed suit)
Ah ! That ugly instrument of love!
Entered through that forbidden gate-
the parting of her legs, as white as a dove.
..
Thunderbolts were they, the lecherous guns.
A tsunami breaking loose inside..
The tormentors would take her by turns
But the torment within, would safe reside.
..
Inside was let the sap of lust
Inside, through the door of paradise.
And on her valleys, did volcanoes burst -
the burning magma, on the rise.
..
A withered bud, on the earth she lay..
her skin so wet, her form- now so frail.
Venus' wine, into her, had made its way,
Or had she fed on a toxic grail ?
..
Love's torture, she could take no more.
They had her killed..the devil's bride.
Alas ! She was no whore .
Lucy died..... satisfied !!

A brother like that

By Dan Clark
Source: Chicken Soup for the soul

A friend of mine named Paul received an automobile from his brother as a Christmas present. On Christmas Eve when Paul came out of his office, a street urchin was walking around the shiny new car, admiring it. “Is this your car, Mister?” he asked.

Paul nodded. “My brother gave it to me for Christmas.” The boy was astounded. “You mean your brother gave it to you and it didn’t cost you anything? Boy, I wish…….” He hesitated.

Of course Paul knew what he was going to wish for. He was going to wish he had a brother like that. But what the lad said jarred Paul all the way down to his heels.

“I wish,” the boy went on, “that I could be a brother like that.”

Paul looked at the boy in astonishment, and then impulsively he added, “Would you like to take a ride in my automobile?”

“Oh yes, I’d love that.”

After a short ride, the boy turned and with his eyes aglow, said, “Mister, would you mind driving in front of my house?”

Paul smiled a little. He thought he knew what the lad wanted. He wanted to show his neighbors that he could ride home in a big automobile. But Paul was wrong again. “Will you stop where those two steps are?” the boy asked.

He ran up the steps. Then in a little while Paul heard him coming back, but he was not coming fast. He was carrying his little crippled brother. He sat up down on the bottom step, then sort of squeezed up against him and pointed to the car.

“There

he is, Buddy, just like I told you upstairs. His brother gave it to him for Christmas and it didn’t cost him a cent. And some day I’m gonna give you one just like it……then you can see for yourself all the pretty things in the Christmas Windows that I’ve been trying to tell you about.”

Paul got out and lifted the lad to the front seat of his car. The shining-eyed older brother limbed in beside him and the three of them began a memorable holiday ride.

That Christmas Eve, Paul learned what Jesus meant when he said: “It is more blessed to give” :)

William Wordsworth: A True Lover Of Nature

Author: Bunty Purkayastha

Nature has always been an inspiration to the poets. They have personified the moon as a silvery lady and the greenery as a lady of spring. William Wordsworth, a famous poet of the Romantic Age has related most of his poems to nature. As the second child among five siblings, he was always encouraged by his father to read poems. He read poems of great poets like John Milton, William Shakespeare and Edmund Spencer. Their verses in a way captured the mind of little William Wordsworth at a very tender age.

Lyrical Ballads, The Preludes and the Lucy Gray are considered as one of the most famous verses of William. Three of them were written at different stages of his life; Lyrical Ballads was published in the year 1789. It actually is a collection of several poems written by him and four by Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

The Preludes, was published after his death by his wife. It is like a semi autobiography describing his early life which he did modified at times with the help of his sister Dorothy Wordsworth.

Lucy Gray an imaginary character of William Wordsworth is divided into five works. This pseudo character was a part of William's loneliness. Among all his works William Wordsworth had a great affinity for this character. According to one of the critic, William Wordsworth "created the character, lived with it and cried on her death".

Among all his beautiful poems the most convincing work is about River Yarrow. In this poem he refers to the river giving a true picture of life. In his poem Yarrow Unvisited he was scared to visit the valley thinking about the sadness that could overshadow him if it fails to match his inception. He heard much about the heavenly place and drew pictures of vivid imaginations in his mind.

On his visit he was surprised to see that the place was beyond ingenuity. In his piece Yarrow Visited, he commented that 'the things of reality are far more beautiful than things of imagination' . He was however not satisfied with his first visit and hence he again visited the place which he described in Yarrow Revisited.

Visit the section of poems by William Wordsworth and float in nature. Enjoy the beauty of his poems and visualize the dreams insipiring them.

Analysis of Paradise Lost

Author: Nibedita Priyadarshini

Paradise Lost begins with Milton describing what he intends to undertake with his epic: the story of man's first disobedience & "loss of Eden" subjects which have been "unattempted yet in prose". His main objective however is to "justify the ways of God to men".

The poem then shifts to focus on the character of Satan who has just fallen from heaven. The scene opens in a fiery, yet dark, lake of hell. Satan, dazed, seems to be coming to consciousness after his fall & finds himself chained to the lake.

Milton tells us that he is tackling the story told in Genesis of the fall of Adam & the loss of Garden of Eden. With it Milton will also be exploring a cosmic battle between good & evil. Supernatural creatures including Satan & the Judeo Christian God himself, will be mixing with humans and acting & reacting with humanlike feelings & emotions. By demonstrating the nature of the beings who created mankind, Milton is presently his culture's, view on what good & evil mean, what mankind's relationship is with the Absolute, what man's destiny is as an individual & as a species.

The story therefore can be read as a simple narrative, with characters interacting with each other along a plot & various subjects. It also holds theological & religious messages, as well as political & social themes.

Milton's portrait of Satan has fascinated critics since Paradise Lost's publication, leading some in the Romantic period to claim that Satan is, in fact the heroic protagonist of the whole work. Milton's depiction Satan has greatly influenced the devil's image in western art & literature since the book's publication.

In the epic tradition Milton is using poetry to tell his story following most prominently the style of Homer. The work, therefore can also be examined through the lens of poetry with an eye towards rhythm & sound.

Milton portrays Satan as a seemingly powerful & noble character who claims to have been wrongfully mistreated by the almighty. Paradise Lost is a work of enduring charm & value because of its theological conception & its beautiful language.

Role of Chaucer in English Literature

Author: Nibedita Priyadarshini

Geoffrey Chaucer is remembered as the author of "The Canterbury Tales", which ranks as one of the greatest epic works of world Literature. Chaucer made a crucial contribution to English Literature in using English at a time when much court poetry was still written in Anglo Norman or Latin. Chaucer is sometimes considered the source of English Vernacular tradition & the ‘father of modern English Literature'. His achievement for the language can be seen as a part of general historical trend towards the creation of Vernacular Literature.

Chaucer's first major work, The Book of the Duchess was an elegy for Blanche of Lancaster. Two other early works by Chaucer were Anelide & Arcite & The House Fame. His Parlement of Foules, The Legend of Good Women & Troilus & Criseyde all date from the time Chaucer is best known as the writer of The Canterbury Tales which is a collection of Stories told by Fictional pilgrims on the road to the cathedral at Canterbury, the tales would help to shape English Literature.

Chaucer also translated some important works. He wrote "The Canterbury Tales" in the Vernacular of the English people. Geoffrey Chaucer is often credited with being the "Father of English Literature".

During Chaucer's life time, most literary works were written in French; in fact Chaucer himself wrote in French & Italian; certainly his poetry was modeled up on French poetry. However, he chose to write in the old English that was popular with those who were not necessarily among the nobility. In addition, his stories have a humor & freedom that anticipated the works of such English greats as Henry Fielding.

He introduced iambic pentameter into poetry, a meter that many a reader recognizes as that of William Shakespeare & is prevalent in much of English & American poetry.

The ideas of Chaucer's development of characterization & large depiction of motivators of characters in his work become critical elements in English Literature after Chaucer. The motion of creating multi dimensional character is powerful elements in the landmarks of Chaucer's English Literature.

How To Memorize Words

Author: Michael Gabrikow

One of the first steps we take when learning a language, be it our mother tongue as children, or a foreign language later on in life, is expanding our vocabulary by memorizing words (usually nouns and adjectives at first). Memorizing is done naturally when we're living in an environment that forces that particular language on us (such as our homes as children, or as visitors in a foreign country) but it can also be "forced" through several methods. The following article will try to present some of these methods that could help you learn how to memorize words faster when learning a foreign language.

Flashcards

Flashcards are the basic tools for word memorizing and although they are used mostly with small children, they can also be useful for grown-ups when learning a new foreign language. Basically, a flashcard is a piece of carton containing an image of a noun (usually nouns, although they can oftentimes contain colors, actions and so forth) with the appropriate word describing it and possibly, a small text that explains what the object is. They are a good way to take your first step into the vocabulary of the foreign language you are learning and they can be fun to use together with your children.

Using Mnemonic Links

A mnemonic is generally described as an abbreviation or a symbolic representation that helps humans memorize a certain "something" easier. Mnemonics are used to enhance and develop the assimilation of data into memory and there's no better use to them than in learning a new language. Since when you're gradually building your new vocabulary for the new language you will inevitably translate and think those words out in your mother tongue, you can use such a mnemonic to make this translation easier to memorize. For example if you've just learnt how to say "seaside" in the foreign language you're studying, imagine a picture of the seaside and then switch back between the native and foreign language words of what you're seeing. The image, which is easier to remember than a word, will act as an intermediate between the two languages.

Memory Enhancement Medication

There are several natural supplements out there that help you memorize stuff faster and for a longer period of time, as well as help with concentration during the learning process. Some of the herbs that are known to have a memory enhancing effect include Ashwagandha, Reishi, Ginseng, Bacopa, Mucuna Pruriens or Fo-Ti. Ginseng is one of the most popular in the list and it is widely used as a supplement in language learning classes as well as generally used by students before exams or during the school year. There are no side effects to these herbs but you might be allergic to one, so it is best if you visit your medic before taking any of them, asking if you are allowed or not to start a long or short-term memory enhancement plan.

There are also several vitamins and nutrients that could help out with memorizing new words, the list including: carnitine, lecitine, carnosine, choline, inositol, tyrosine and several others, but these are not the point of our discussion.
