Analysis of Paradise Lost

Paradise Lost begins with Milton describing what he intends to undertake with his epic: the story of man's first disobedience & "loss of Eden" subjects which have been "unattempted yet in prose". His main objective however is to "justify the ways of God to men".

The poem then shifts to focus on the character of Satan who has just fallen from heaven. The scene opens in a fiery, yet dark, lake of hell. Satan, dazed, seems to be coming to consciousness after his fall & finds himself chained to the lake.

Milton tells us that he is tackling the story told in Genesis of the fall of Adam & the loss of Garden of Eden. With it Milton will also be exploring a cosmic battle between good & evil. Supernatural creatures including Satan & the Judeo Christian God himself, will be mixing with humans and acting & reacting with humanlike feelings & emotions. By demonstrating the nature of the beings who created mankind, Milton is presently his culture's, view on what good & evil mean, what mankind's relationship is with the Absolute, what man's destiny is as an individual & as a species.

The story therefore can be read as a simple narrative, with characters interacting with each other along a plot & various subjects. It also holds theological & religious messages, as well as political & social themes.

Milton's portrait of Satan has fascinated critics since Paradise Lost's publication, leading some in the Romantic period to claim that Satan is, in fact the heroic protagonist of the whole work. Milton's depiction Satan has greatly influenced the devil's image in western art & literature since the book's publication.

In the epic tradition Milton is using poetry to tell his story following most prominently the style of Homer. The work, therefore can also be examined through the lens of poetry with an eye towards rhythm & sound.

During Chaucer's life time, most literary works were written in French; in fact Chaucer himself wrote in French & Italian; certainly his poetry was modeled up on French poetry. However, he chose to write in the old English that was popular with those who were not necessarily among the nobility. In addition, his stories have a humor & freedom that anticipated the works of such English greats as Henry Fielding.

He introduced iambic pentameter into poetry, a meter that many a reader recognizes as that of William Shakespeare & is prevalent in much of English & American poetry.

Since when you're gradually building your new vocabulary for the new language you will inevitably translate and think those words out in your mother tongue, you can use such a mnemonic to make this translation easier to memorize. For example if you've just learnt how to say "seaside" in the foreign language you're studying, imagine a picture of the seaside and then switch back between the native and foreign language words of what you're seeing. The image, which is easier to remember than a word, will act as an intermediate between the two languages.

We all know that Shakespeare is great but do we know why is he great? The reason behind his greatness? It has been rightly quoted that "Shakespeare can be Newton, but Newton can't be Shakespeare" what do this quote mean? How to understand this man? I won't go in much detail as the whole library is insufficient to describe him, and the lifetime is insufficient to understand him. Newton made his law of gravitation after his observation on apple falling to the ground, his law of gravitation was based on the imagination that why apple has fallen to the ground and why not went flying to other place, and as far as imagination is concerned Shakespeare is the master in this, just because the one imaginative clue Newton made his theory of gravitation, while Shakespeare is the store house of imagination.

On the question why Shakespeare is great, anyone will answer that he had wrote many plays thus he is great, but this is not the complete answer, look at the directors and writers of today's generation they specializes on single type of writing or direction, there are comic writers, tragic writers, writers on society affairs, horror movie writers, romantic writers etc, now look at Shakespeare's writing, when he wrote "Romeo and Juliet" it is the best ever written romantic play, the scene of "Romeo and Juliet" where Juliet stands on her balcony and Romeo with flowers in his hands waits for her, can be still seen in some advertisements and movies, when Shakespeare wrote tragedy, how can we forget Macbeth the tragic man, and the flaw in character he had, Othello, King Lear etc. When he wrote comedy, none of the play can surpass As You Like it, the unforgettable dialogue of Jacques in which he tells about seven stages of man is still remembered by us. When he wrote historical plays king Richard series won't be superseded, when he used his hand in poems, look at the lines from his sonnet and the way he treated the subjects. So this man called Shakespeare specializes in all the themes and forms.

When we look at the characters portrayal by Shakespeare we remember the unforgettable character of Othello, Macbeth, Brutus, Romeo, etc the villainous character of Iago in Othello can't be surpassed by any of the villain ever created.

The plays by Shakespeare and its resemblance in today's generation are also notable. What Shakespeare wrote 500 years ago is also applicable today, we can see the situations in our society and neighborhood and characters whom we meet having the close resemblance with the society and characters of Shakespeare's play. So did this man have a time machine by the aid of which he saw the characters and society of 21st century and portrayed it into his plays?

Coming to the vocabulary, it is said that the vocabulary of a learned man is not more than 2000, compare it with the vocabulary of Shakespeare who had more than 40000 active vocabularies count.

We don't enjoy the particular stage of life, childhood is continued with the thought of become a man, and manhood is continued with the thought of gaining luxury.

Look into the eyes of the person who is on his death bed, ask him what he will do, if he is given a chance to live again, and he will tell you all the things that he wants to do which he haven't done, he will say you that he either wants to read a particular book he haven't read, or wants to see his or her kids growing up, or wants to spend his time with his wife, etc, he will never tell you that he wants to add more money to his bank account. Think about the percept of the man who is going to die, and you will understand what we are missing. Close your eyes, tell yourself that it's the last day of your life, and ask your self what are the things you are going to do today, if you believe it to be the last day of your life, would you think of gaining more luxuries? Will you want to grow up sooner? Would you spend more time in office? The answer will be no. Then want would be your answer?
